To do this, the book uses one hundred color plates of Otto Staudinger’s classic monograph on exotic butterflies, published at the end of the 19th century. The species considered by the German author to be representative of the most characteristic genera are displayed on the plates in their original size, splendor and colour. The introductory chapters discuss the various butterfly families, listing the Latin and Hungarian names of the taxonomic categories, with a brief description of the latter. The 1,360 specimens depicted on the hundred plates represent 1,245 species. The scientific names, distribution, and host plants of their caterpillars are given in a separate chapter. In this chapter the reader will also find the current taxonomic status, nomenclatural combination and classification for each species. After the section of the magnificent coloured plates, the scientists who discovered and described butterflies are discussed in a nutshell via their short biographies. The practical use of the book is provided by alphabetical indices for genus- and species group names, and the names of the larval hostplants.

The text is by Paul Kitaibel (1757-1817), professor of botany at the University of Pest. ‘He spent much of his career roaming Hungary and collecting botanical, zoological, and mineralogical specimens as well as folklore. His collections of botanical and mineralogical specimens formed the basis for the natural history collection in the Hungarian National Museum’ (Johnston). The work was financed by Count Franz Waldstein (1759-1823), an Austrian military leader who fought against the Turks and North African states as a Maltese knight and in the Austrian-Turkish war and the Prussian campaign. From 1789 he devoted himself to botany, travelling with Kitaibel through Hungary collecting plants, interspersed with military service. His herbarium is in Prague. The aquatint view is signed by Hirscher. The plates are engraved by Karl Schutz after drawings by his son Johann.

About the original edition

At the time of its appearance this book  was a unique attempt to share knowledge about the different animals of the world with the hungarian public. Beforehand no work like this existed that would describe the different animals, birds as well as mammals with a scientific approach but at the same  time addressed to a wilder public. The remarkable illustrations make this book a very special one for any animal lover and for the hungarian speaking public it is a wonderful delight to read about the animals in old hungarian language. Published in 1841, Pest.

Beschreibung Seltener Pflanzen ihrer fürtrefflichkeit wegen von neuem herausgegeben durch Johann Daniel Meyer.

The original edition

The original is a very scarce German edition of Martyn’s famous botanical work first published London 1728. The plates were re-engraved by Meyer but closely copied from the originals of Jacob van Huysum. The text is in Latin and German. The 1728 edition is the first botanical book illustrated with colour-printed plates. It is devoted to new species growing at the Chelsea Physic Garden and the Cambidge Botanic Garden, some of which had been brought from the Caribbean region by Dr. William Houston. Dunthorne calls the book ‘a rather amazing item’, because its plates are printed in colour in an early form of mezzotint. ‘The work is of particular interest as it contains some of the earliest examples of colour-printing from a single metal plate. Many of the prints in the ‘Historia’ are printed in green but some are printed in two or more colours from a single plate at one impression. All were afterwards touched by hand. Most of the plates are after Jacob van Huysum, a flower painter born at Amsterdam. He worked in England from about 1721 and was the brother of the famous Dutch flower painter Jan van Huysum. The plates depict plants from Cape of Good Hope (a few Pelargosiums and a Mesem), North America and the West Indies.

Nürnberg, printed by Andreas Bieling, 1752. Folio (495 x 350 mm). pp. (6), 24, with 50 colour-printed mezzotint plates finished by hand. Contemporary half calf, spine in 7 compartments with floral gilt ornaments and red gilt lettered label, speckled boards.

Reprint edition

Digital printing, in half canvas binding. The size of our edition is slightly smaller than the original.
