On the basis of the interpretation of a Latin building inscription found in 2004 in the Roman municipality of Brigetio on the Danubian frontier of the Roman Empire, the author tries to identify an amphitheatre built during the reign of Severus Alexander (222 to 235 A.D.) sponsored by the mayor of the municipality and offering a sector in a length of 70 Roman feet (cca. 20, 3 meters) for soldier-visitors of the local legion I Adiutrix Pia Fidelis Severiana.
If the hypothesis is correct, Brigetio has also had two amphitheatres, like two other legionary centers of Pannonia, Aquincum and Carnuntum. The book deals not only with the problems of the possible localization of the amphitheatres, but also with the reflection of the social order in Roman theatres, circi and amphitheatres on the basis of Greek and Latin sources and inscriptions mentioning sectors preserved for different groups of the Roman society.
