The Notitia Dignitatum, which was compiled under the reign of the emperors Arcadius and Honorius, presents the civil and military administration of the Roman Empire divided into western and eastern parts in 395 A.D. The intention behind this book was probably to provide a well arranged and regularly updated overview of higher and lower offices, the commanders of the army guarding the borders and the mobile army stationed in the inner parts of the empire of the military units under their command, their garrisons and their signage systems in the administration divided into a civil and
a military part and „doubled” in the eastern and western parts of the empire.
